What is a thigh lift?

Thigh lift is surgery that helps remove excess skin and fat on the inside of the thighs due to lack of physical exercise, sudden weight loss and advanced age. Sagging occurs because the skin in the inner thigh area is very thin and the production of collagen and elastin is reduced. In fact, sagging is often accompanied by cellulite and stretch marks.

    • Who is it for?

Everyone who has a serious sagging problem, regardless of age and gender, can participate in a thigh lift. Both middle-aged and younger people can suffer from sagging skin and the presence of intense localized fat. These signs indicate the need to perform the operation, as they negatively affect the overall appearance and often affect the emotional state by reducing self-esteem.

    • The first visit to the doctor’s office

The discussion with the Plastic Surgeon aims to assess the current situation on the inside of the thighs and to examine the motivations and expectations of the person concerned. If there is a consensus on the degree of sagging and the problem in the area as a whole, a detailed examination of the buttocks will follow, during which the necessary photos will be taken, and the interested party will be informed about the possible complications. Then, the date of the operation and the procedures that require the operation such as the cost, the type of anesthesia, etc. can be set.

    • Is thigh straightening surgery painful?

The postoperative period is slightly painful due to the incision point. During physical movement the patient feels a discomfort, which is tolerable and manageable after the use of painkillers that soothe mild discomfort. The patient also needs to be meticulous in caring of the affected area for a faster recovery.

    • What complications may occur?

Thigh lift has no high-risk complications. In fact, the probability of their occurrence is minimal and usually of mild intensity. Some of these are the formation of hematoma or inflammation, the opening of the wound, obvious postoperative scars and more rarely the necrosis of the skin. All are highly manageable, following timely information. That is why it is very important to choose a specialized Plastic Surgeon who will perform the operation with precision, detail and mastery, thus reducing potential complications.

    • What kind of tests will be needed before the thigh lift?

The preoperative examination is performed to ensure the best possible results without creating complications during the operation. Initially, the candidate’s medical history is retrieved, and some preoperative instructions are provided for people who are smokers or undergoing medication. This is followed by a series of general blood tests, a cardiogram and x-rays.

    • How long does thigh straightening surgery take and what kind of anesthesia is required?

The operation is usually performed simultaneously with the method of liposuction to release localized fat and perimeter sculpting of the buttocks. Utilization of this method and the degree of sagging of the skin can affect the duration of the operation. Generally, the duration ranges from 2 to 3 hours. If the affected area shows intense sagging that creates an unsightly appearance, the use of general anesthesia is recommended, otherwise the use of local anesthesia with sedation is recommended but with the patient’s 24-hour overnight stay in the clinic.

    • During surgery

An incision is first made in the pubic or inguinal area so that the scar is not visible later. In the case where the skin is very loose, the incision is made along the inner thigh. Then, the excess skin is removed, and if deemed appropriate, the fat cells are suctioned evenly with the help of a cannula to remove local fat. Finally, the skin is attracted and stapled.

    • After surgery

Regardless of the type of anesthesia used, the patient will remain in the clinic for 24 hours until the drainage is removed the next day. Gauze will have already been placed in the area of the incision and either an elastic bandage or elastic leggings will have been applied, which will contribute to the faster healing of the affected area and to the avoidance of any injury. Consistent use of the elastic bandage or leggings is considered necessary for 1.5 months. At the same time, mild analgesics will be given to reduce any discomfort and some medical instructions for the care of the inner thigh will be given. If the sutures are not absorbable, they will be removed after 2 weeks.

    • In how many days can one return to their daily activities?

The return of the patient to the workplace will depend on the nature of the work, i.e. whether it is manual or office work. Generally, however, the return is possible after 1 or 2 weeks. In the beginning, they will be able to engage in light daily activities and after about 2 months they can expect their full reintegration into everyday life and the beginning of exercise.

    • Results

The first results from buttock lift become apparent at the end of 3 months and are perfected about 1 year later. The thighs are tight and well-shaped, without any imperfections and perfectly harmonized with the rest of the body. The patient gains confidence and does not hesitate to wear tight clothes to highlight their new appearance. For longer lasting results it is necessary for the patient to follow a healthy lifestyle that will include proper nutrition and intense physical exercise.
