What is neck liposuction?;
Neck liposuction is an invasive method to remove accumulated fat in the neck area and specifically in the area below the lower jaw. The excess fatty tissue that accumulates, causes skin deterioration and sagging, because of which the corners of the lower jaw are often hidden. This can be due to various factors such as the effect of age, extra pounds, heredity, normal facial anatomy, etc. For this reason, it can often be combined with face lifting.
- Who is it for?
Although there is no age restriction, the operation is indicated when the person concerned, man or woman, has reached the age of 18. At this age they possess the mental and emotional maturity to have a neck liposuction. Usually, of course, it is observed that the operation is performed in a large percentage of older women due to the intense skin sagging they present.
- The first visit to the doctor’s office
The discussion with the Plastic Surgeon aims to evaluate the magnitude of the problem that exists and to investigate the motivations and realistic expectations of the person concerned. This is followed by measuring the weight and adipose tissue that has accumulated in the affected area and assessing the degree of muscle relaxation. Then, before setting the date and the procedures required to perform the operation, the candidate is informed about the results and possible complications.
- Is neck liposuction painful?
Neck liposuction is a safe method that aims to offer the best natural result with the least possible pain, without scarring and causing injury. Postoperative pain is minimal and is fought with the help of mild analgesics.
- What complications may occur?
Each surgery carries some risks, as does the patient’s non-compliance with medical instructions and advice. For example, the inconsistent use of the special corset can create hematoma and subsequently infection in the neck area. Additionally numbness is another rare complication that can be recovered over time. The skill of the Plastic Surgeon can save such situations, but the results may vary.
- What kind of medical tests will be needed before neck liposuction?
Prior to the operation, a complete check-up of the candidate’s health is required by retrieving their medical history, performing general blood and urine tests, an electrocardiogram and chest x-ray, as well as a preventive hormone test. The operation is aimed at older people also, so special care is required.
- How long does neck liposuction last and what kind of anesthesia is required?
It can last from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the extent and type of problem. The operation is performed using local anesthesia and mild sedation. Therefore, the patient is able after a few hours to be discharged and return home. However, in more severe cases, the use of general anesthesia is indicated.
- During surgery
Initially, very small incisions (2 mm) are made under the jaw and behind the ear lobes, and with a special tool, the accumulated fat is sucked without affecting or injuring the muscles, blood vessels and nerves. Thus, the skin contracts and acquires a smooth, youthful structure in harmony with the rest of the face.
- After surgery
After the surgery, the patient can leave the clinic immediately, if they were under local anesthesia with mild sedation, or remain in the clinic if general anesthesia was used. It is important, when they return home, that the postoperative instructions of the Plastic Surgeon are followed, and especially their recommendation regarding the special corset, which they must wear for about 1 month. The special corset sticks to the skin and helps to reattach the underlying tissues to prevent any future skin damage. If the patient feels minimal pain, mild analgesics are given.
- In how many days can one return to their daily activities?
The patient can return to work and daily activities in about 15 days with some caution and reservation in the first month. Recovery from this type of surgery is quick and spectacular.
- Results
Neck liposuction offers a long-term result in a short time and in the absence of substantial pain. From the first week the swelling has subsided, and the skin loosening of the area has disappeared. Now the patient has regained their self-confidence. To maintain this result, however, after the recovery period they will need to take care of their body weight by following a Mediterranean diet program in combination with a physical exercise program.
